In the real world you might see someone you would love to ask out but you’re wearing a dirty work uniform, or you’ve been playing sport and you’re sweating, or you don’t like the shoes you have on, etc. etc. With online dating, none of this is an issue and you can decide to contact the person you’re interested in whenever you want.
Similarly, you’ve also got time to plan exactly what you want to say, and you can recheck everything you’ve said before you send it. This reduces the likelihood of you blurting out something stupid or embarrassing in those early stages (something that’s surprisingly common where nervousness is concerned).
